I Bought a Bunch of Vegetables at the Farmers Market and Had No Idea What to Do With Them

I did what felt like the right thing. I signed up for a local CSA (the half share, let’s not get crazy). I showed up to the farmer’s market to pick up my haul and came home with a canvas bag full of beautiful vegetables.

Then I put them on the counter and stared at them.

It was almost time for school pickup, so I threw everything in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator and went on my way. Two days later I opened the drawer and realized that was my first mistake. Wilted greens, shriveled radishes. The guilt crept in.

If you’ve done this, if you’ve stood in your kitchen holding an unfamiliar vegetable thinking “…okay, now what?”, and then shoved it in the fridge to deal with tomorrow, this blog is for you.

I’m not a gardener. I’m not a chef. I just want to eat more vegetables and am genuinely trying to figure out how to stop wasting the gorgeous stuff I bring home. I’ll be sharing everything I learn right here, in plain language, for people like me. Maybe sharing this all in one spot will keep me from googling “how do I store beets in the refrigerator” every Wednesday after my hauls.

In the next post I’ll fill you in on where I went wrong on day one and how I (hopefully) won’t ruin more veggies next week.
